Authors' Club Lunch with Louisa Young

May 14, 2019 - 12:30 pm
National Liberal Club, 1 Whitehall Place, London

‘The most riveting, heartbreaking book I’ve ever read about addiction, but above all about the nature of love.’ Linda Grant

Louisa Young first met Robert Lockhart when they were 17. Their stop-start romance lasted decades, during which he became a celebrated composer and she an acclaimed novelist. Always snapping at their heels was Robert’s alcoholism, a helpless, ferocious dependency that affected his personality before crippling and finally, despite five years of hard-won sobriety, killing him.

You Left Early is at once a compelling portrait of a unique and charismatic man; a bittersweet reflection on an all-consuming love affair; and an honest and affecting guide to how the partner of an alcoholic can survive when the disease rips both their lives apart.

Louisa Young is a writer and songwriter. Her eleven novels include the award-winning My Dear I Wanted to Tell You trilogy.  She is half of the bestselling children’s author Zizou Corder (with her daughter Isabel Adomakoh Young), and half of the band Birds of Britain (with Alex Mackenzie). As a journalist, she wrote for the motorcycle magazine Bike, the Guardian and Marie Claire, where she was lead feature writer, mostly covering eccentric aspects of US culture such as unlikely beauty pageants and born-again Christian gang bikers.

The charge for the two-course lunch (starter, main course, coffee and chocolates) and a glass of club wine is £33 per person. To book, phone 020 7930 9871 or email louisa@nlc.org.uk. Payment can be made by cheque, bank transfer or debit card.
