National Liberal Club, 1 Whitehall Place, London
For our first lunch of 2020, we are delighted to welcome back Jess Kidd, whose debut novel Himself was shortlisted for the 2017 Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award. Her third, Things in Jars, is out in paperback this month.
This macabre Victorian mystery features Bridie Devine, the finest female detective of her age, as she takes on her toughest case yet. Christabel Berwick has been kidnapped. But Christabel is not supposed to exist… As pipe-smoking, cross-dressing Bridie fights to recover the stolen child, she enters a world of fanatical anatomists, crooked surgeons and mercenary showmen. Anomalies are in fashion, curiosities are the thing, and fortunes are won and lost in the name of entertainment…
Jess Kidd was brought up in London as part of a large family from county Mayo. In addition to the BFNA, Himself was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards. She won the Costa Short Story Award the same year. Her second novel, The Hoarder was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year 2019. Both books were BBC Radio 2 Book Club Picks. Jess is currently working on her fourth novel and first children’s book. She is also developing her own original TV projects with leading UK and international producers.
