Best First Novel Shortlist Lunch

March 26, 2020 - 12:30 pm
National Liberal Club, 1 Whitehall Place, London

Ever since the Best First Novel Award was given to Alan Sillitoe for Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, the Authors’ Club has known how to pick a winner. Now in its 65th year, the Best First Novel Award is unique in that the shortlist is drawn up not by a panel of judges but by Authors’ Club members.

Members have been reading their way through the hefty pile of submissions, and have now whittled them down to an impressive longlist. Which of these 12 books will make it to the shortlist? Come prepared for some spirited discussion, as this has been an exceptional year for literary debuts.

Haven’t read much? Or any at all? The lunch will be a great opportunity to discover the best of upcoming talent, find a new favourite or even identify a future classic.

The winner will be chosen from the shortlist by this year’s guest adjudicator, and the prize awarded at a dinner on Wednesday 20 May.

The charge for the two-course lunch (starter, main course, coffee and chocolates) and a glass of club wine is £33 per person. To book, phone 020 7930 9871 or email Payment can be made by cheque, bank transfer or debit card. Please book by 5pm on Friday, 20 March.
