Authors’ Club Lunch with Louise Doughty

September 17, 2026 12:30 pm
London

We are delighted to welcome Louise Doughty back to the club to talk about her memoir On This Spot Fell One Tear of Love.

Doughty has pieced together the origins of her parents’ relationship from a hidden collection of letters. On This Spot Fell One Tear of Love is Doughty’s story of losing her parents and the unexpected discovery she made whilst clearing out the family home. Inside a black suitcase, the last item left in their bungalow before the sale of the house was completed, she stumbled upon a treasure trove of letters that told the story of her parents’ love affair. These letters offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of working-class people in the 1950s and the tight social conventions that almost prevented her parents from staying together and building a life.

Louise Doughty’s most recent novel is A Bird in Winter. Her previous books include Platform Seven, filmed for ITV; Black Water, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year; the bestseller Apple Tree Yard, which was adapted for BBC One; and Whatever You Love, nominated for the Costa Novel Award and the Women’s Prize for fiction. She has been nominated for many other prizes including the Sunday Times Short Story Prize and the CWA Silver Dagger, along with creating and writing the hit BBC drama Crossfire. Her work has been translated into thirty languages.
